Description
The pterygoid fossae are the two large, deep depressions found along the right and left pterygoid processes of sphenoid bone. On its corresponding side, each pterygoid fossa:
—is formed by the combination of the superior portion of the lateral surface of a medial plate and the superior portion of the medial surface of a lateral plate;
—provides an origin site for a medial pterygoid muscle.
