Energy Research Output and Impact
Energy is fundamental to the survival and development of human society, and it is an important factor constraining human economic and social development. China’s energy development has been taking a path featuring high technological content, low resource consumption, low environmental pollution, good economic efficiency, and guaranteed safety.
This report describes the overall research performance of the subject area in the past decade and establishes the following four sub-fields of Energy Science: Carbon Emission Reduction Technology, Renewable Energy, Energy Storage and Hydrogen Energy, and Energy Efficiency Management. It includes scholarly output and impact, research collaboration and funding, and the integration of research and industry.

Tan Kah Kee Innovation Laboratory (Fujian Science & Technology Innovation Laboratory for Energy Materials of China) was established on September 10, 2019. It is one of the first four provincial innovation laboratories in Fujian. Established by Xiamen University, it’s the first physical laboratory named after the founder of Xiamen University, Tan Kah Kee. As the first public institution co-sponsored by Xiamen City and Xiamen University, the laboratory is the innovation platform that enjoys the largest investment, greatest worth, highest position, and most dynamic system in Fujian, aiming to build a national strategic science and technology force.
The Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials (iChEM) was established jointly by Xiamen University, Fudan University, the University of Science and Technology of China, and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has been created under the framework of “Collaborative Innovation Program” of the Ministries of Education and Finance of China, the so-called “2011-Program”. The center gathers and fosters a number of top-notch international academic talents to make enormous original scientific achievements on energy material chemistry and build a world-class scientific research center.

Given the strategic significance of Energy Science, it is essential to evaluate and predict its developmental trends. This report uses quotation from the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, Elsevier's Scopus, along with the research evaluation platform SciVal, the funding database Funding Institutional, patent analysis database PatentSight, relevant national policy files, official websites of energy enterprises, and national and regional patent offices, and provides an evaluation of the output, role, contribution, and impact of Energy Science through bibliometric analysis, combined with big data indicators of energy scientific results and patents from 2010 to 2021.

Achieving large-scale low-carbon and even carbon-neutral energy use is a major and long-term issue for sustainable development of human beings. The report on Landscape and Development Trends of Energy Research provides a comprehensive overview and detailed analysis of trends in basic disciplines in the field of internationally advanced energy industries from the perspective of bibliometric analysis. It not only shows the trend and development of new energy science and technology, but also reveals China's positive contribution to the development of the international energy field.
This report is very useful for both policy makers and front-line researchers. In addition, high quality patents are also an important indicator for an energy power, and I hope that future energy strategy reports will also provide more objective and detailed analysis on patent technology and other aspects.
