Because the high tech sector and its needs are relatively new, rare earth elements (REEs) have been virtually ignored for decades – so there's a lot of catching up to do. While some scientists are analyzing samples in the lab, others are looking on beaches, in old mines, under the sea, and even on the moon to locate more REEs.
