Open minds to more knowledge & inspire learning success

Connect your students — and faculty members — with the interdisciplinary depth and breadth of information they need to be successful in their scholarship.

Scopus helps students discover and evaluate scholarly articles, books, conference proceedings and authors from more than 240 disciplines and growing. Scopus supports curricula that cover historic, groundbreaking science (dating back to 1788) to the most current new and novel approaches in emerging disciplines.

With more than 82 million documents from over 7,000 publishers and more than 17 million author profiles, Scopus supports educational goals designed to:

  • Explore and understand a research problem
  • Identify new ways to interpret scholarship
  • Reveal literature gaps
  • Resolve conflicts among seemingly contradictory studies
  • Identify prior scholarship to avoid duplication
  • Point to the need for additional research
  • Locate an author’s research within the existing literature

…having a database as inclusive and interdisciplinary as Scopus is invaluable to us.

— Bruce Abbott, Health Sciences Librarian at Blaisdell Medical Library, University of California, Davis Health Care (USA)

…[Scopus] author profiles are a great way to view people who are experts in their field and identify some of the influencers. For example, a student can look at their own UNMC mentor’s profile and track the trajectory of that person's work. Author profiles can help students become aware of the various stages of a research-focused career.

University of Nebraska Medical Center (USA)

Built for inquiring minds

The search feature of Scopus is built to quickly deliver the most highly relevant information so students can focus on their coursework, research papers or theses. Search and results filtering can be done through:

  • Document search: search directly from the homepage and use detailed search options to deliver the most appropriate results
  • Author search: search for a specific author by name or by Open Research and Contributor Identifier ID (ORCID)
  • Affiliation search: identify and assess an affiliation’s scholarly output, collaborating institutions and top authors
  • Advanced search: narrow the search scope by using field codes, proximity operators and/or Boolean operators
  • Refine results: refine results list to specific categories of documents
  • Language interface: the Scopus interface is available in Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese and Russian (please note, however, that the documents delivered via Scopus are not localized)

Scopus has the best user interface of any of the resources out there. That has direct benefits for systematic reviews. And we have found that it’s much easier to demonstrate to our user base how to do citation-based searching in Scopus.

More than science

Foster interdisciplinary exploration by having students use Scopus to uncover literature in adjacent disciplines. Scopus can also be used to teach students to understand the scholarly conversation of a topic through reference lists and cited articles.

Scopus is very well-received here at UCI — it is growing in content; the social sciences component is becoming stronger and stronger. These developments are great for us as we don’t have to go to other databases to fill in the gaps.

— Hector R. Perez-Gilbe, Research Librarian for the Health Sciences, University of California, Irvine (USA)
