The plantar interphalangeal ligaments blend with the collateral ligaments.

Function

The plantar interphalangeal ligaments help increase the articulation area for the base of the phalanx and limit the degree of extension at the interphalangeal joint. They also reinforce the articular capsule surrounding the interphalangeal joints.
