Origin

The collateral branch arises from the posterior intercostal artery near the angle of the rib.

Course

The collateral branch of the posterior intercostal artery runs forward within the intercostal space, keeping close to the superior border of the rib below. It is accompanied by a collateral branch of the corresponding intercostal nerve (or collateral branch of the anterior ramus of thoracic nerve).
