Useful apps for travelers to China

  • Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay are essential, as most shops, taxis, and restaurants are cashless. Both now allow foreign visitors to link an international Visa/Mastercard.

  • Messaging: WeChat is the main communication tool in China; worth installing before arrival.

  • Maps: Amap (Gaode) or Apple Maps work well locally; Google Maps is unreliable.

  • Ride-hailing: DiDi (has an English interface and is also available inside Alipay/WeChat).

  • Public transport: in Shanghai, the Metro Metropolitan app or the metro QR code within Alipay.

  • Translation: Baidu Translate or Microsoft Translator; Pleco is excellent for Chinese.

  • Trains: Trip.com or the official 12306 app for high-speed rail.

Connectivity: an international roaming plan or a travel eSIM is recommended, since some international services are not accessible on local networks; arranging data before arrival avoids problems.

Chinese Visa

Please be aware that you may require a travel visa to enter China.

Please always check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China website or the Chinese Visa Application Service Center website or with the Chinese Embassy in your country for the latest information on travel requirements to China.

WARNING - SCAM ALERT: Exhibitor Housing Services (EHS) & Exhibitor Housing Management (EHM), Traveller Point (TP) and Travel Hosting Team (THT)

Elsevier has been made aware that third-party companies are targeting Elsevier conference speakers and attendees with a fraudulent travel and hotel booking scheme.

The companies are calling/emailing conference attendees, using email addresses which appear very similar to official Elsevier email addresses, and claiming to be the “official” housing bureau and/or authorized by Elsevier to book hotel/travel accommodations for the conference. This is entirely false and should anyone contact you, please do not provide them with any of your details, but refer this to Elsevier. If you are in any doubt about an email regarding the conference, please check this with a member of the organising team via: [email protected]opens in new tab/window
