Five universities recognized for their continued growth in international excellence and research impact

Warsaw, November 28, 2017

Elsevier, the information analytics business specializing in science and health, has announced the winners of this year’s Polish Research Impact Leaders Awards. The awards, organized by the Perspektywy Education Foundation (PEF), are part of the conference Polish Universities in International Perspective, Rankings and Strategic Management of a University, recognize universities for their global impact and visibility in research.

The awards ceremony, now in its second-year in Poland, is part of an Elsevier global initiative aimed at supporting research and development, and helping advance scientific research across a broad range of disciplines.

The winning institutions in the six research disciplines are:

  • University of Rzeszów – Agricultural Sciences
  • Gdynia Maritime University – Engineering and Technology
  • University of Rzeszów – Humanities
  • Medical University of Gdańsk – Medical Sciences
  • University of Zielona Góra – Natural Sciences
  • Gdańsk University of Technology – Social Sciences

The awards recognize institutions outstanding in their fields for high-quality research, while also contributing to the international visibility of the institution and Polish research overall.

“Elsevier is honored to work with its partners in Poland in order to contribute and support execution of research strategies identified on national or institutional level. These awards are an example of such cooperation, showcasing results of universities in key areas, such as internationalization, research impact and quality of research in general,” said Felix Haest, Elsevier’s Vice President of Emerging Markets.

The evaluation criteria are based on a combination of bibliometric indicators collected from Elsevier’s SciVal. Indicators needed to reflect an increase in the number of publications in the most prestigious scientific journals, and showcase a high-level of international cooperation and impact, as measured by the Field-Weighted Citation Index. Universities whose authors published at least 50 publications in the period 2014-2016 in the given disciplines were considered for the award.

“We have been cooperating with Elsevier in preparing the Perspektywy Ranking of HEIs in Poland for years. Elsevier’s Research Impact Awards are a natural consequence of a wider co-operation of Perspektywy with Elsevier,” said Waldemar Siwinski, President of PEF. “As ranking experts, we know very well that it is difficult to think of Polish universities’ significant advancement in rankings without their improving the visibility and reputation. Therefore we strongly support universities that make efforts to be present in the best publications, to collaborate with authors from around the world, and to have citation rates of the highest level. Such universities are awarded in the Elsevier Research Impact Award competition. It is an excellent idea, much needed for Polish universities,” Mr. Siwinski added.

The winning institutions were honored at a gala awards ceremony hosted Monday evening by PEF. Below is a selection of comments from the Polish universities’ representatives:
