Description

The articular facet of base of sacrum is the smooth, superior area found along the body of the first sacral vertebra. It is located on the median part of the base of the sacrum, and it articulates with the inferior intervertebral surface of the fifth lumbar vertebra, via an intervertebral disc, forming the lumbosacral joint.

In some individuals, the fifth lumbar vertebra can be partially or completely fused to the base of the sacrum, which is known as sacralization of the fifth lumbar vertebra.
