Engineering failure analysis is a key interdisciplinary diagnostic and prevention tool that involves a whole-cycle approach, incorporating an awareness of design considerations, manufacturing processes, safety, reliability, integrity, maintenance, environmental damage, sustainability, service loading conditions, and end-of-life disposal and decommissioning.

The tenth ICEFA conference focuses on the practical application of technical knowledge to engineering failure analysis and the extensive use of case studies and real-life examples, in conjunction with theoretical/numerical/experimental analysis of failure mechanisms, to develop an understanding of engineering failures for different industrial applications.  Engineering failure analysis aims to improve design approaches, increase operational life, prevent accidents and disasters, enhance manufacturing processes, and incorporate appropriate inspection and maintenance strategies in asset integrity management.

In 2024, the supporting publication, Engineering Failure Analysis (opens in new tab/window) (opens in new tab/window)completes its 30th year (1994-2024) of publishing high-quality research that represents an essential reference for analysing and preventing engineering failure. Come to Athens to celebrate the 30th year anniversary!

Attendance at this conference will enable you to:

  • Network with the leading researchers in engineering failure analysis and initiate new research collaborations.

  • Attend talks from internationally renowned researchers.

  • Share your research findings with the experts in engineering failure analysis community.

Conference Topics

Poster abstracts are invited on the following topics and should be submitted using the online abstract submission system(opens in new tab/window)

  • Analysis of engineering failure associated with environmental damage, such as hydrogen embrittlement; additively manufactured parts; high-temperature components; bioengineering materials; energy structures and infrastructure.

  • Microscopic investigation of failure mechanisms in engineering materials (metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics, composites, electronic materials, and biomaterials).

  • Principles and methods of failure analysis. Novel approaches and tendencies: e.g., Artificial Intelligence and machine learning applied to engineering failure analysis and fractography.

  • Case studies of failures in industrial sectors (e.g., renewable energy, aerospace, biomedical, nuclear, microelectronics, marine and offshore power generation, thermal power, oil and gas, metallurgy, automotive, rail, civil construction, manufacturing, consumer goods and mining).

  • Regulatory agencies, legal matters, ethical issues, and insurance in the failure analysis industry.

  • Role of engineering failure analysis in the design, materials, fabrication, operation, maintenance, prevention, safety, risk assessment, reliability analysis, life prediction and safety evaluation, quality assurance and business management.

  • Philosophical aspects of "lessons learned" approach and impact on the welfare of the community.

Keynote and plenary talks from renowned speakers

The program will include invited plenary lectures, contributed talks and poster sessions highlighting the latest research in engineering failure analysis. The programme will be curated by a committee of world class academic leaders in their respective fields.

Supporting Publication

Engineering Failure Analysis(opens in new tab/window), the conference supporting publication, publishes research papers describing the analysis of engineering failures and related studies. We are pleased to announce Engineering Failure Analysis has a new increased 2022 Impact Factor of 4.0 (Clarivate Analytics, 2023), a CiteScore of 6.3 and it is Q1 in SCIE Materials Science, Characterization & Testing (Clarivate Analytics, 2023).

Workshop

Art and Philosophy as Sources of Inspiration and Navigation to the Failure Analysis Journey

Date: Tuesday, 9 July 2024, 15.20 – 17.20

Description - The main objective of the Workshop is the elaboration of a challenging and innovative “experiment”, aiming to underline the multi-faceted and diverse nature and role of Failure Analysis process, hosting two presentations with the following titles:

The materials failure as a fingerprint of the artwork creative process

(speaker: Professor Athena Alexopoulou)

Introduction to Philosophical Roots and Process Based Approach: A Holistic Perspective of Failure Root-Cause Analysis

(speaker: Dr. George Pantazopoulos)

ICEFA Special Issue

There will be a Virtual Special Issue associated with the ICEFA X conference published in Engineering Failure Analysis. The virtual part means that paper will be published as soon as they have been accepted and not wait for a complete issue. Only work accepted and presented at the conference and with at least one participant from the conference as a co-author, will be considered for the virtual special issue. All the submissions will go through the same rigorous peer-review process as all other submissions to the journal.

Submission window: 1 October 2024 - 31 December 2024
