Professor B. Mark Heron joined the University of Huddersfield in 2012 after holding lecturing appointments in the Department of Colour & Polymer Chemistry, University of Leeds (2000 – 2012), the Department of Chemistry, University of Hull (1998 – 2000) and the University of Central Lancashire (1994 – 1998).

Mark’s research background in heterocyclic chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry has supported activity in ‘colour chemistry’, which encompasses the design, synthesis and applications of traditional and modern organic colorants. Mark has a longstanding interest in functional dye systems which embraces photo-, thermo- and more recently electro- chromism. He has authored ca. 140 publications spanning research papers, encyclopaedic review chapters and patents. Mark has been an editor for Dyes and Pigments for over 9 years and is a current Editor-in-Chief.

Professor Mark Wainwright is currently one of the Editors-in-Chief of Dyes & Pigments, having been an Editor since 2010. He has been involved in photosensitiser research and development since 1987, when he was a research fellow in drug discovery for the photodynamic therapy of cancer at the University of Leeds.

His interests lie in the use of dyes in biomedicine and for the past 25 years he has worked mainly in photodynamic infection control applications (photoantimicrobials), especially concerning conventional drug resistance. He joined Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in 2005 and with the University formed the spin-out drug-discovery company Pharmalucia in 2008. He has been Professor of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy at LJMU since 2011. His book Photosensitisers in Biomedicine was published by Wiley in 2009, and he has over 200 other publications.
