Kensuke is a civil-environmental engineer and holds appointments at the University of Tokyo Graduate Schools of Engineering and Frontier Sciences, where he organizes the Urban Sustainability Science Laboratory. He is one of the founding faculty members of IR3S and achieved remarkable progress in promoting sustainability science in various academic communities. He serves as an Editorial Advisor of Sustainability Science Journal, the Science Planning Group member of Asian Pacific Network for Global Change Research, and Distinguished External Faculty member of Asian Institute of Technology. He is a member of Engineering Academy of Japan and Associate Member of Science Council of Japan. He received B.S. and M.S from Tohoku University in Civil Engineering, and Ph.D. from University of Utah in Civil Engineering.

She received her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse in 1991. She investigated mass transfer in multi-phase systems with chemical and biological reactions and since 1999, her works focused on the investigation of the intensification of the bioprocess performances dedicated to biofuel production. She was involved in numerous projects in bioenergy supported by National Agencies, industrial partners and European Union. She co coordinates a project dedicated to the creation of a Graduate School of Research in Biotechnology Building Bio-Based Economy: the objective is the creation of an international Master’s degree, a doctoral program and an international scientific competition in Biotechnology and Process. She is member in Energy from Biomass Group in the French National Alliance for Energy Research Coordination, contributing to pinpoint scientific and technological barriers to identify R&D programs. She is also an expert for the French National Research Agency, as Vice President and then President of the Evaluation Committee of the Bioenergy Program from 2011 to 2013, as member of the Evaluation and Steering Committee of the Energy Program from 2014 to 2017. Member of the National Committee of CNRS from 2014 to 17, she is member of the Scientific Committee of CNRS's Institute for Engineering and Systems Sciences (INSIS).

Murthy’s group broadly focuses on developing sustainable solutions for a resource-constrained world. Sustainable solutions are technically feasible, economically viable, resource sustainable, environmentally conscious and socially acceptable. Dr. Murthy’s research is specifically focused on sustainable bioprocessing and engineered systems analysis. His group employs a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches to conduct multi scale and systems level analyses. They study the nutrient-energy-water nexus with a particular focus on building the resilience of agro-ecological systems to pulse and pressure disturbances.

Prof. Rova is also the Deputy scientific leader of Bio4Energy, a Swedish strategic biorefinery center with emphasis on research that uses forest as a raw material for sustainable production of energy, new materials and biofuels. Ulrika has been the National representatives in the FP1306 Cost action “Valorisation of lignocellulosic biomass side-streams for sustainable production of chemicals, materials & fuels using low environmental impact technologies” where she also has been the leader for the working group “Preatreatment/fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass”. She currently heads the projects; Food-grade prebiotic production, merging marine and forest resources for moving up the cellulose value-chain, Bark-derived bio-adhesives for engineered wood panels, Use of organosolv lignin hydrophobic nanoparticles as biodegradable selective flotation collectors, Electricity-driven microbial symbiosis for the production of complex CO2-neutral chemicals. Prof. Rova is also PI in several other projects financed by EU’s Horizon 2020, the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas, VINNOVA and the Swedish Research Council.

She has been conferred Best Reviewer certificate from Bioresource Technology journal for two years. She has served as guest editor of Renewable Energy journal, Bioresource Technology and Indian Journal of Experimental Biology for a special issue. She is an editorial board member of Bioresource Technology, Biofuel Research Journal and Journal of Energy and Environmental Sustainability. She has received; Bioresource Technology, Elsevier most cited paper award for the year 2015. She is the Editor of Bioresource Technology Reports since 2017.
