Roland Franz

Dr. Roland Franz is Head of Department ‘Product Safety and Chemical Analysis’ at Fraunhofer IVV Dr. Franz, has studied chemistry at the University of Würzburg, Germany with a major focus on organic chemistry and received an additional toxicological background during a 3-years postdoc research stay at the Institute of Toxicology in Würzburg. He joined Fraunhofer in 1987 and since then his scientific work was related physical-chemical interactions between packagings and foodstuffs or other products.

Was involved in numerous national and international lead research activities in support of legislation and safety of food contact articles. Has coordinated numerous EU projects such as the ‘FOODMIGROSURE’ project (www.foodmigrosure.com) and contributed in the EU project ‘FACET’ (http://www.ucd.ie/facet/) to the development of a software tool for exposure estimation of the consumer for food packing constituents. Very recent and still ongoing research activities: exploring the migration potential of nano-particles from food packaging materials.

(Co-)author of more than 130 scientific publications. Member and chair of the ‘Committee for Consumer Products’ of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, BfR, in Berlin. Contributes as scientific expert in food regulatory questions relevant for EU Commission’s DG SANCO in Brussels. Member of the European Food Authority’s (EFSA) CEF Panel.
