His main research interests centre upon the human dimensions of environmental change, and mainly focus on eastern Africa and east and Southeast Asia.
He was PI and Scientific Coordinator of the EU FP7-funded HEALTHY FUTURES project, which investigated environmental change effects on a selection of water-related infectious diseases in eastern Africa. Previously - and for more than eleven years - David held the Professorship (College Chair) in Geography at Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland.

Maxine A. Whittaker, MBBS, MPH , PhD, FAFPHM GAICD is the Dean of the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences and Co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Vector Borne and Neglected Tropical Diseases at James Cook University.

A major academic focus is One Health and animal and human health systems and medical anthropology. She has lived/worked in many countries in Africa, Asia and Oceania, published more than 100 peer reviewed publications, and been awarded and involved in several major national and international competitive, industry and other research grants. In 2017 she was awarded the Royal Australasian College of Physicians International Medal, in recognition of outstanding service in developing countries.
