New Virtual Campus to Train Tomorrow’s Academic Leaders

Elsevier Publishing Campus offers free training, advice and options for debate on a variety of topics related to academic publishing

Amsterdam, April 30, 2015

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, has announced the launch of its free online training campus, Elsevier Publishing Campus (, which aims to furnish researchers with the skills and knowledge they need to build an effective academic career.

The Elsevier Publishing Campus is an online platform that provides lectures, interactive training and professional advice on a variety of topics, ranging from the fundamentals of academic publishing to broader issues like gender in research and open science. Researchers will be able to register for training courses, learn from leaders in research and publishing, and take part in topical debates.

“The role of researchers today is continuously developing. Among other challenges, researchers need to secure funding, collaborate internationally, share data, publish results, commercialize research and demonstrate impact. Early career researchers in particular are under significant pressures, and we want to support them in whatever way we can,” said Hannah Foreman, Head of Researcher Relations at Elsevier. “With the Elsevier Publishing Campus, we want to provide researchers with the skills resources they need to help them publish world class journal articles,  book proposals, or write a successful grant applications. Ultimately, we want to help them succeed on their chosen academic career path.”

The Campus is made up of a series of ‘Colleges’, including the College of Skills Training, where researchers can learn about topics including writing articles and grant applications, peer review and ethics, and getting themselves and their research noticed. In the College of Big Ideas, online Campus visitors can debate the big themes in academia and publishing. Each College offers a variety of training, information and tools that researchers can choose from to support their research and career development. For every module or seminar completed, researchers will be recognized for their efforts with a certificate from Elsevier.

Elsevier has been offering its onsite training workshop program called Publishing Connect for several years, educating around 35,000 researchers annually. To meet the growing demand for skills and publishing training, the Elsevier Publishing Campus will also include online versions of the Publishing Connect training material for researchers around the world.

“We’re really excited to be launching such a comprehensive educational environment for researchers aiming to publish their work,” Foreman added. “It’s great that we can reach more early career researchers with the Elsevier Publishing Campus – we hope it will be the place they visit to develop their skills and take a bit of that pressure off.”

About the Elsevier Publishing Connect program
Publishing Connect workshops are generally held at institutions by Elsevier’s journal publishers, usually in partnership with one of Elsevier’s journal editors. Since the Publishing Connect program started in 2006, the number of PhD students, postdoctoral students and junior faculty participating has risen year on year. On average, the program reaches 35,000 early career researchers per year through 350+ workshops. The workshops are often hosted by institutions in countries where research is growing rapidly and knowledge of the publishing process is still relatively basic. In these locations, the modules on how to write a paper and authors’ rights and responsibilities have been particularly popular.
