HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Healthcare Award Brazil and Latin America 2019 winner and finalists announced

The Hospital Márcio Cunha wins the "Outstanding ICT Achievement Award" for harnessing existing and new ICT to provide significant improvement to patient care and safety

São Paulo, May 22, 2019

Elsevier, the information analytics business specializing in science and health, and HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) have announced the winner of the first Brazil and Latin America HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Healthcare Award 2019. The award recognizes outstanding achievements globally in the usage of health information and technology.

The Award has been running since 2013 and has held a number of editions in other international regions, namely the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Europe. This year marks the launch of the Brazil and Latin America Award. HIMSS and Elsevier have received several submissions from Argentina, Colombia and Brazil. All submissions demonstrated how their digital solutions have contributed to the betterment of the quality of patient care.

The winner, finalists and their projects were:

  • Winner: Hospital Márcio Cunha / Fundação São Francisco Xavier with their project: “Predictive detection of sepsis - Integration between Márcio Cunha Hospital and Laura Robot”. The cognitive Robot created by Laura Networks was integrated into MCH’s system with the objective of reducing sepsis mortality in hospitalized patients by issuing alerts to anticipate clinical conducts in patients with a clinical picture suggestive of sepsis according to the ILAS protocol.
  • First finalist: Hospital Erasto Gaertner with their project “Robot Laura”. Robot Laura is connected to the hospital electronic medical record database and programmed to map vital signs of patients, and then alerts the Nursing team. The reduction of hospital admissions and time used to make antibiotic prescriptions were some of the project outcomes.
  • Second finalist: Unimed Volta Redonda with their project “Automation of Clinical Protocols”. Through the creation of intelligent forms in the medical records, the forms address the diagnosis and provide a medical prescription, in an individualized way to the patient. The solution achieved better clinical outcomes overall.
