Dr. Jonathan Teich Assumes New Role
Philadelphia, November 15, 2006 – In a continuing effort to meet the ever-changing needs of clinicians in today’s demanding healthcare environment, Elsevier has hired Dr. Jonathan Teich as chief medical informatics officer. In his new role, Teich will be responsible for leading the development of the vision, strategy, and broad product design to translate Elsevier’s world-class content base and publication resources into products that provide a new level of support and value to clinical practice and healthcare delivery.
"Today clinicians are charged with the complicated task of delivering state-of-the-art health care in a cost-effective manner," said Brian Nairn, chief executive officer, Health Sciences, Elsevier. "The addition of Jonathan Teich to Elsevier’s already outstanding health science team will add a new level of expertise as we develop innovative solutions to address the most critical needs of the healthcare community."
A practicing physician, Jonathan Teich brings with him a wealth of experience in the scientific and technical fields. Teich is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard, and a board-certified attending physician in emergency medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), where he has practiced since 1983.
Dr. Teich's primary focus has been the use of information systems to directly improve clinical care, prevent adverse events, and streamline clinical workflow. At Brigham and Women’s – later the Partners HealthCare System – he was responsible for the overall clinical information systems vision as well as leading the design of a wide variety of applications and services. He was the primary designer of many of BWH's award-winning clinical information applications, including the computerized physician order entry system, ambulatory record, clinical decision support systems, emergency medicine systems, and the Handbook electronic information library. A 1998 study published in JAMA showed that BWH's order entry system has reduced significant adverse drug events by 55%.
He later helped to found Healthvision, Inc., an Internet healthcare company producing innovative Web-based clinical information systems and patient/community information sites for large healthcare organizations. He served Healthvision as chief medical officer, responsible for strategic product vision across clinical and patient product areas.
As a recognized leader in the field of health information infrastructure, e-prescribing, and clinical decision support, Teich serves on a number of key industry and government leadership councils. He is co-chair of the panel responsible for the HHS-sponsored Roadmap for National Action on Clinical Decision Support and is a board member of the eHealth Initiative, a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and of HIMSS, and a member of the American Health Information Community Quality Workgroup. He has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, books, and editorials in the field of medical informatics and healthcare information systems.
Teich was educated at Caltech, MIT, and Harvard Medical School. He will be based in Boston and the Philadelphia office of Health Sciences, Elsevier.
