How to link to books on ScienceDirect

There are a number of ways to link directly to book resources on ScienceDirect, from search queries to title lists to individual book titles. Follow the instructions below to add links from your institute's website straight to a particular Book Series or Major Reference Work, rather than linking just to the ScienceDirect home page.

General books links

Listing subscribed and nonsubscribed titles

  • You can also link directly to a full listing of all of the books to which your institute is subscribed by adding "/subscribed/" to the end of any of the links above.

  • For example - eBooks your institution subscribes to:
    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/books/subscribed/

Linking directly to Book Series home pages

Book Series linking URLs are very simple. Use a URL of the form:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/bookseries/nnnnnnnn
Where nnnnnnnn is the 8 digit ISSN of the Series without the hyphens.

Linking directly to Reference Works or Reference Module home pages

Reference Works and Reference Modules URLs are very simple. Use a URL of the form:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/referenceworks/nnnnnnnnnnnnn
Where nnnnnnnnnnnnn is the 13 digit ISBN of the Reference Work or Reference Module without the hyphens.

For example, to link to the International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (Second Edition), ISBN 978-0-08-097087-5, use: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/referenceworks/9780080970875

For example, to link to the Reference Module in Biomedical Sciences, use: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/referenceworks/9780128012383

Linking directly to any eBook home page

To link to an individual eBook title, use a URL of the form: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/book/nnnnnnnnnnnnn
Where nnnnnnnnnnnnn is the 13 digit ISBN of the eBook without the hyphens.

For example, to link to Alan Turing: His Work and Impact, ISBN 978-0-12-386980-7, use: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/book/9780123869807

Troubleshooting:

  • The hyphens must be removed from the ISSN or ISBN.
  • If the ISSN contains an "X", only the uppercase version will work.
  • If the ISSN of a book series has changed over time, only the most recent one will work.
  • eBooks are listed by their 13 digit print ISBNs on ScienceDirect.
  • If you attempt to link with an incorrect ISSN or ISBN, or to a book or reference module which is not in ScienceDirect, the home page of ScienceDirect will be displayed.
