Origin

The common plantar digital branches of the lateral plantar nerve give rise to the proper plantar digital branches. The medial-most common plantar branch gives rise to two proper plantar digital branches, while the lateral-most continues as one proper plantar digital branch.

Course

The lateral-most proper plantar digital branch of the lateral plantar nerve extends from the heads of the fifth metatarsal to the lateral side of the fifth distal phalange. The medial-most proper plantar digital branches extend from the fourth intermetatarsal space into the adjacent sides of the fourth and fifth digits.

Branches

There are no named branches.

Supplied Structures

The proper plantar digital branches of the lateral plantar nerve provide motor innervation to flexor digiti minimi brevis muscle and the interossei of the fourth intermetatarsal space. They also provide sensory innervation to the lateral side of the little toe and the adjacent sides of the fourth and fifth toes.

Lateral Plantar Nerve

ScienceDirect image

The lateral plantar nerve is often compared to the ulnar nerve in that it supplies motor branches to the remaining muscles of the lateral plantar aspect of the foot and cutaneous innervation to the lateral one-third of the plantar aspect of the foot.
