Origin

The anterior cutaneous branch arises as the terminal branch of the tenth intercostal nerve.

Course

As the terminal portion of the tenth intercostal nerve pierces through the anterior rectus sheath, it becomes the anterior cutaneous branch.

Branches

The anterior cutaneous branches divide into medial and lateral branches that extend over the rectus sheath.

Supplied Structures & Function

The anterior cutaneous branch conveys sensory information from the skin of the anterior abdominal wall, in the same plane as the umbilicus. See our dermatome map for cutaneous innervation.
