For classification purposes, the muscles of the leg are divided into three distinct compartments:

- muscles of the anterior compartment of leg;

- muscles of the lateral compartment of leg;

- muscles of the posterior compartment of leg.

ScienceDirect image

The term ALMA during sleep indicates a quickly alternating pattern of anterior tibialis activations occurring at a frequency from 0.5 Hz to 3 Hz. The usual duration of a single leg muscle activation within an ALMA pattern is 100 to 500 milliseconds, and at least 4 alternating activations are needed to form an ALMA series.
