Discover Elsevier’s upcoming work around gender and research

As a steward of global research, Elsevier assumes a responsibility to promote gender equity in research in a data-driven way. Leveraging our robust Scopus Author Profiles combined with powerful author disambiguation methodology, we have now begun work on our third gender and research report, which we plan to publish in early 2020.

The newest report will refresh data from our earlier reports, expand quantitative analysis into new areas and themes, and include a qualitative research study, focusing on:

  • Perceptions of gender equity in research
  • Research participation and output
  • Career progression
  • Process of science

She Figures 2018

The She Figures 2018 report monitors the level of progress made towards gender equality in research and innovation in the European Union. It is funded under Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation programme. Published every three years, the She Figures is the main source of pan‑European, comparable statistics on gender balance in science. The data also sheds light on differences in the experiences of women and men working in research — such as relative pay, working conditions and success in obtaining research funds.

Elsevier provided the data and analyses for Chapter 7 of the report on Research and innovation Outputs.

Mapping Gender in the German Research Arena

Despite the policies and regulations implemented by the European Commission and within individual countries, there are prominent gaps between women and men in terms of the number of scientific researchers, decision-making positions held, and other aspects of career development such as informal networks of collaboration and access to funding. This report provides evidence and analysis on potential gender gaps in research in Germany by linking data from Scopus to data from a large online social networking service.
