Perspectives from government, industry and academia
With the focus of research impact increasingly moving toward demonstrating societal impact, the implications for the scientific community, funders and research institutions continue to evolve.
On December 5th, 2024, Elsevier, a global information analytics company, hosted academic, industry and government leaders at the National Press Club in Washington, DC to discuss the topic of research impact and provide a space for new ideas to emerge around the themes of place-based innovation, university-industry-funder partnerships, and research culture.
Many questions were explored during this half-day event, including:
How can we change research culture to incentivize sharing and harmonization of data to improve and accelerate science, allowing for greater impact?
How can federal agencies help drive that culture change?
What methodologies are effective for balancing both academic and community needs to establish priorities and drive economic growth?
What cultural norms need to change within each of the key research stakeholder groups to allow for earlier measures of societal impact?
How can we change the current structure of incentives and recognition within universities?
How can we better facilitate university-industry partnerships for improved collaboration?
What’s already in progress and working well?
