In April 2019 Elsevier, in partnership with Nanjing University held the China Connect Energy Symposium as a one-day event that showcased some of the best work occurring across the interdisciplinary field of energy research within China; with additional talks by international speakers. The talks covered the improved utilization of carbon resources, energy storage and conversion technologies and the related development of new materials.See more
Modern technology-based civilization is intimately tied to the utilization of energy and its availability. Abundant energy has allowed humanity to have reached the present relatively high levels of wellbeing and achieve for the most part increased quality of life. Without reliable energy sources, future economic and social development would be jeopardized.
Despite recent increases in prices, energy remains relatively “cheap”, but with the global population rising and industrialization in many of the developing nations increasing, demand is putting ever greater pressure on the limited energy resources of our planet. At the same time humanity’s overdependence on fossil fuels, the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, which makes up more than half of our energy, has had a negative impact on our environment and climate.
Both the environmental and economic challenges mean that the world must transition away from overreliance on traditional sources of energy to a sustainable future of renewable energy sources in combination with new technologies for the storage, distribution and utilization of that energy.
Chemists are taking a leading role in seeking solutions to these difficult problems and in driving the new technologies that will support humanity’s transition to a sustainable energy future.

Metal-organic frameworks for catalysis and energy.Biography
Qiang Xu received his PhD in 1994 from Osaka University. He is Professor at Yangzhou University, Director of AIST-Kyoto University Chemical Energy Materials Open Innovation Laboratory (ChEM-OIL), Adjunct Professor at Kobe University/Kyoto University, and Distinguished Honorary Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received the Thomson Reuters Research Front Award in 2012 and was recognized as a highly cited researcher (2014-2018) in both fields of Chemistry, Engineering/Materials Science by Thomson Reuters/Clarivate Analytics. His research interests include the chemistry of nanostructured materials and their applications, especially for catalysis and energy. He has published more than 370 papers with citations > 26000 and an h-index > 85 (Web of Science). He is on a number of editorial/advisory boards of journals, including EnergyChem (Elsevier, Editor-in-Chief), Coordination Chemistry Reviews (Elsevier; Associate Editor), Chem (Cell Press), Matter (Cell Press), Chemistry-an Asian Journal (Wiley), Advanced Sustainable Systems (Wiley) and ChemNanoMat (Wiley). He is elected member of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) and National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI).

Solution processable Metal Organic Frameworks for efficient gas separations: from porous liquids to mixed matrix membranes.Biography
Born in Huesca (Spain) in 1977, Jorge received his MSc. in Chemistry in 2002 and his PhD cum laude in Chemical Engineering in 2006, both at the University of Zaragoza (Spain). He was post-doc (2006 to 2009), Assistant Professor (2010 to 2012), Associate Professor (2012 to 2014) and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Professor (2014 – 2017) of Catalysis Engineering at TUDelft (NL). Since 2017 he is Professor and Director at the KAUST Catalysis Center.
Gascon is a member of the board of the International Zeolite Association Commission on Metal Organic Frameworks. He has been the recipient of the prestigious VENI (2010), VIDI (2013) and ERC Starting (2013) personal grants and of the 2013 ExxonMobil Chemical European Science and Engineering Award. He is a highly cited researcher according to Clarivate Analytics.
Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks: Emerging Materials for Catalysis.Biography
Dr. Zhiyong Tang is currently a Professor(2006-) in National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China. He obtained his Bachelor and Master degree from Wuhan University in 1996. He then moved to Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences with Professor Erkang Wang and obtained a Ph.D. degree in 1999. After six years as a postdoctoral fellow in Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Oklahoma State University and University of Michigan, in November 2006 he won the 100-Talent Program, Chinese Academy of Sciences and started his current position. Professor Tang’s research interests are mainly focused on controllable synthesis, property manipulation and practical application of inorganic nanomaterials.

Fundamental understanding of electrocatalysis – From single crystal planes to model nanocatalysts.Biography
Shi-Gang Sun obtained his Bachelor of Science from Xiamen University, China, in 1982, Doctorat d’Etat (Docteur ès Sciences Physiques) from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), France, in 1986. After one-year post-doctoral research in the Laboratoire d’Electrochimie Interfaciale du CNRS, France, he returned to China by the end of 1987, and served as associate professor and later full professor in 1991 at the Department of Chemistry of Xiamen University till now.
The main research interests of Prof. Sun include Electrocatalysis, Electrochemical Surface Science, Spectroelectrochemistry, Nanomaterials and Chemical power sources. He has published up to now 555 SCI papers with peer citation over 20,000, obtained 14 innovation patents, co-authored 3 books entitled respectively “In-Situ Spectroscopic Studies of Adsorption at the Electrode and Electrocatalysis” (Elsevier, 2007), “Electrocatalysis” (Chinese Chemical Engineering Press, 2014), and “Nanomaterials in Electrocatalysis” (Chinese Chemical Engineering Press, 2018) and contributed by invitation 22 chapters to 20 scientific books.
Prof. Sun has been elected member of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015, fellow of International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) in 2007, and fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2005. He has been awarded the “Brian Conway Prize” from International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), “Distinguished Contribution Award” from the Chinese Society of Electrochemistry, “Le prix Franco-Chinois 2014-2015” jointly from Société Chimique de France (SCF) and Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), and the State Natural Science Award (2nd Degree) of China.
He is now editorial board member of Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry, Functional Materials Letters, ACS Energy Letters, Electrochemical Energy Review, National Science Review, Applied Chemistry and Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry, serving as associate editor to Electrochimica Acta, Spectral Analysis and Spectroscopy, Chinese Journal of Chemical Education, Acta Chimica Sinica, and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Electrochemistry.

Dan Wang graduated from Jilin University in 1994. He entered a master's degree program at his alma mater in the same year. He obtained his Ph.D. from Yamanashi University in Japan in 2001. He conducted his post-doctoral research at Kochi University, Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth and Kyoto University, successively. He was awarded by Hundred Talent Program of the CAS, and served as professor of the Institute of Process Engineering, CAS in February 2004. And he earned the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2013; 2014 Young and Middle-aged Leading Scientists, Engineers and Innovators, Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China; 2016 Young and Middle-aged Leading Scientists, Engineers and Innovators, "Ten thousand plan"-National high level talents special support plan; Highly Cited Researchers for 2018 in Chemistry.
In recent years, he mainly focused on the design and controllable synthesis of functional inorganic materials with hollow or porous structures, and their applications in solar cells, Li-ion batteries, photocatalyst, drug release, biosensor and gas sensors, etc. He has published over 140 papers in SCI journals, such as Nat. Prof. An-Hui Lu is currently a professor at the State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology. He received National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China (2012); selected as Young Leading Talents of Scientific and Technological Innovation (2014) by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Cheung Kong Scholar by the Ministry of Education of China (2015), Leading Talents of National High-level Personnel of Special Support Program (2015). He has authored and co-authored more than 200 papers with citation over 14,000 times, an H-index 58. He has been awarded as the Most Cited Chinese Researchers 2014-2018 in the field of Chemistry. He serves as Editorial Board “ChemCatChem”, “ChemistrySelect” and “Chinese Journal of Catalysis”. His research interests include synthesis of porous materials for heterogeneous catalysis, adsorption, energy storage and conversion.

Dr. Jia Zhu is a Professor at College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Nanjing University. His scientific research interest is in the area of nanomaterials, nanophotonics and nanoscale heat transfer.
Dr. Zhu obtained his bachelor in Physics at Nanjing University, received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
He has received several prestigious awards including: Tan Kah Kee Young Scientist Award (2018), OSA Young Investigator Award (2017), Dupont Young Professor Award (2016), MIT Tech Review TR35 award (2016) , Division of Inorganic Chemistry Yong Investigator Award (American Chemical Society, 2011), Gold Medal of Graduate Student Award (Material Research Society, 2010). Prof. Mohammad Khaja Nazeeruddin current research at EPFL focuses on Perovskite Solar Cells and Light-emitting diodes. The high impact of his work has been recognized by invitations to speak at several international conferences.

Antonio Facchetti obtained his Laurea degree in Chemistry cum laude and a Ph.D in Chemical Sciences from the University of Milan. In 2002 he joined Northwestern University where he is currently an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry. He is a co-founder and currently the Chief Technology Officer of Flexterra Corporation. Dr. Facchetti has published more than 450 research articles, 13 book chapters, and holds more than 120 patents (H-index 94). He received the 2009 Italian Chemical Society Research Prize, the team IDTechEx Printed Electronics Europe 2010 Award, the corporate 2011 Flextech Award. In 2010 was elected a Kavli Fellow, in 2012 a Fellow of the American Association for the Advanced of Science (AAAS), in 2013 Fellow of the Materials Research Society, in 2015 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and in 2016 a Fellow of the ACS Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering. In 2010 he was selected among the "TOP 100 MATERIALS SCIENTISTS OF THE PAST DECADE (2000-2010)" by Thomson Reuters and in 2015/2016/2017 recognized as a Highly Cited Scientist. In 2016 he has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and was awarded the 2016 ACS Award for Creative Invention. In 2017 he was awarded the Giulio Natta Gold Medal from the Italian Chemical Society for his work on polymeric materials.
