Session: Impact Reimagined

From Knowledge Production to Real World Impact: Rethinking Business School Strategy

📅 Saturday, August 1 at 2:45 PM to 4:15 PM 📍 Pennsylvania Convention Center Hall A - Exhibit Hall Theater

The traditional business school was established to professionalize management through rigorous, discipline-based research and systematic knowledge dissemination, a model still deeply embedded in today's incentive and accreditation systems. Recent initiatives, including AACSB's Framework for Research Impact, responsible research movements, and the 4th Generation University framework, reflect a broader transformation. Collectively, these approaches propose a shift from viewing impact as an outcome of individual scholarship to understanding it as the product of institution-wide ecosystems that connect research, teaching, industry engagement, policy influence, and regional development.

This session explores how universities are adopting the 4GU framework and will consider what lessons and approaches business schools can put into practice. Drawing on experiences from the 4GU initiative, alongside business school leaders who are actively redefining how their institutions create, recognize, and communicate societal impact, the discussion will examine how schools are redesigning incentive systems, building stakeholder partnerships, and developing new ways of measuring value, with a focus on what has actually worked and how it’s measured. The 4GU framework provides a useful lens for making sense of experience from schools that are already doing this work, helping institutions articulate a more coherent and ambitious vision for their role in regional and global ecosystems.

Drawing on perspectives from university leadership, scholarly publishing, and management research, the discussion will explore implications for deans and faculty. Panelists will briefly address the structural barriers that make this transition difficult: reward systems still dominated by elite journal lists, promotion criteria misaligned with societal engagement, and the challenge of sustaining faculty buy-in for approaches that may not yet be reflected in how their careers are evaluated. The session aims to leave participants with practical insights they can take back to their own institutions.
