Maria João Melo

Presentation title: Brilliant dyes after centuries in illuminated manuscripts: how did medieval alchemists do it?
Maria João Melo is President and Full Professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology-New University of Lisbon. After a PhD in Physical Chemistry (1995), specifically in Photochemistry, she decided to apply her expertise towards conservation of works of art. As Italy is a leader in this area, she chose to do her PostDoc in Florence (1996-98), working at the Italian Research Council (CNR). She became an expert in infrared spectroscopy applied to cultural heritage (CH) and started research on the photodegradation mechanisms in polymeric systems, predicting performance lifetimes.

Her current research subjects are focused in the study of molecules of colour in Art, namely the photophysics and photochemistry of historical dyes. This knowledge is applied in the development of new conservation methodologies of Medieval Illuminations and of Contemporary Art. Other fields of expertise are Colour in Nature. Her present challenge is to strengthen her interdisciplinary research and approach, at the frontiers of the social and natural sciences, promoting public engagement.
Ramón Martínez Mañez

Ramón Martínez-Máñez is full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Head of the Interuniversity Research Institute for Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM) in Valencia and Scientific Director of the Biomedical Research Center Network in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER BBN).

He is an active researcher in the field of sensing and hybrid organic-inorganic nanostructured gated materials for different applications. His publications (more than 410) have been cited over 17,000 times and he has an h index of 61 (web of Science; h index of 68 and 23,300 times cited in Google Scholar). He has participated in over 100 research projects as coordinator. He has co-authored a scientific reference book published by Wiley in 2010 and is also co-author of 17 book chapters. He holds 38 PhD thesis supervised (10 obtained the Polytechnic University of Valencia Ph.D. Award). He is coordinator of the Interuniversity PhD Program in Chemistry at the UPV, which obtained the prize of the Social Council of the UPV to the best doctoral program of the 2017/2018 academic year. He has been visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge, UK. He is Co-Chairman of the journal ChemistryOpen and member of the International Advisory Board of the journals Chem. Asian. J. and ChemPlusChem, published by Wiley-VCH. He has participated in 42 projects in collaboration with national and international companies. He holds 29 patents, 17 of them international. Three of these patents have been transferred to companies. He is co-founder of the spin-off Senolytic Therapeutics SL. He received the Research Excellence Award 2016 from Real Sociedad Española de Química and recently the Rey Jaime I Price of New Technologies in 2018.

From 2008-2009 he served as president of the German Chemical Society (GDCh). In 2013-2014 he was president of the German Association for the Advancement of Science and Medicine. He is member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, North-Rhine-Westphalian Academy for Sciences and Art, National Academy Leopoldina, European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft, Academia Europaea and acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering. In 2010 he received an Advanced ERC Grant for his work on nanographenes. He is associate editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Soo Young Park

Soo Young Park earned his PhD degree from Seoul National University in 1988. He was a senior researcher in the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST, Korea) from 1985 to 1995. Prof. Park joined Seoul National University as a faculty member in 1995 and was promoted and tenured to be full professor of Materials Science and Engineering in 2004.

He was a director of the Organic Nanophotonics National Research Laboratory (NRL) of Korea from 2004 to 2009 and a director of the Creative Research Initiative Center for Supramolcular Optoelectronics Materials (CSOM) from 2009 to 2018. Prof. Park has been awarded the Shinyang Engineering Award (2005), Samsung Polymer Award (2007), Academic Research Award of Seoul National University (2009), and the Sudang Prize (2016). In 2010, he was appointed fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST). His research areas include design and synthesis of molecular electronics and photonics materials related to the fluorescence, phosphorescence, electroluminescence, solar cell, transistor, battery, artificial photosynthesis, photochromism, sensing, optical recording, and nonlinear optics.

Ben Zhong Tang is Stephen K. C. Tang received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from South China University of Technology and Kyoto University, respectively. He conducted postdoctoral research at University of Toronto. He joined HKUST as an assistant professor in 1994 and was promoted to chair professor in 2008. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2009 and 2013, respectively.Tang has published >1,200 papers. His publications have been cited >67,000 times with an h-index of 129. He has been listed by Thomson Reuters as a Highly Cited Researcher in both areas of Chemistry and Materials Science. In 2002, Prof. Yoon moved to the Ewha Womans University, where he is currently a Professor of Department of Chemistry and Nano Science. He is a member of Korean Academy of Science and Technology, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry and currently a Distinguished Professor of Ewha. Prof. Yoon has published 320 SCI research papers (h-index: 90). He was listed as highly cited researcher in chemistry (2014-2018). His research interests include investigations of fluorescent probes, activatable photosensitizers, theranostics and organic functional materials.
