Call to establish the International Algae Technology Alliance for Sustainability (IATAS)opens in new tab/window - deadline: 23 July 2026

The International Conference on Algae and Sustainability 2026 (ALGS 2026) will serve as a premier interdisciplinary platform for researchers, engineers, industry professionals and policymakers in the field of algae and sustainability.
The International Conference on Algae and Sustainability 2026 (ALGS 2026) will take place on 24-26 July 2026 in Nanchang, China. It has developed from the highly successful International Conference on Algal Biomass, Biofuels and Bioproducts. By broadening the conference scope, we aim to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, address global sustainability challenges, and highlight innovative solutions that leverage algal research for a more sustainable future.
The conference will focus on exploring the latest research frontiers, innovative applications, and practical solutions that leverage algae to address global sustainability challenges.
The scope encompasses the entire value chain of algae research and utilization, from fundamental biological studies to cutting-edge technological developments and industrial implementations.
The conference will also emphasize cross-disciplinary collaboration and international cooperation to accelerate the translation of algal research into real-world sustainable practices, fostering a greener and more sustainable future through the power of algae.
ALGS 2026 will:
Accelerate sustainable solutions: bridge the gap between cutting-edge algal research and practical, scalable applications that address urgent global sustainability challenges, such as climate change mitigation, algal blooms, resource scarcity, and environmental remediation.
Provide cross-disciplinary collaboration: foster collaboration between diverse stakeholders (academia, industry, policymakers, NGOs) and integrate expertise across biology, engineering, environmental science, and synthetic biology to advance holistic algae-based innovations.
Knowledge transfer and commercialization: translate fundamental biological discoveries into commercially viable technologies by connecting researchers with industry leaders, startups, and investors, ensuring innovations reach real-world implementation.
Global networking and policy alignment: establish an international platform for sharing region-specific insights, harmonizing regulatory frameworks, and promoting equitable access to algal technologies for sustainable development worldwide.
Emerging technology showcase: highlight breakthrough advancements in areas like genetic engineering, bioreactor design, algae-bacteria systems, and algal medicine, inspiring new research directions and interdisciplinary partnerships.
The global bioeconomy and the broader sustainability landscape are undergoing a profound transformation as governments, industries, and societies accelerate the transition toward a green, low-carbon future. We are witnessing a pivotal moment where algal biotechnology moves beyond its traditional status as a subject of basic laboratory inquiry to emerge as a suite of scalable, deployable solutions across sustainable nutrition, advanced materials, environmental remediation, and industrial carbon management. Despite significant scientific progress, a critical challenge remains: the gap between research innovation and large-scale industrial implementation. This challenge is rooted not only in technological barriers but also
in the absence of an effective international framework that can coordinate innovation,
standardization, pilot validation, and commercialization. While existing scientific societies play an essential role in advancing knowledge and fostering academic exchange, they are not structured to drive the integrated technology development and industrial deployment required to unlock the full potential of the global algae sector.
In response to this imperative, and initiated by Nanchang University, together with a growing coalition of international research institutes and industry pioneers, we formally propose the establishment of the International Algae Technology Alliance for Sustainability (IATAS).
IATAS is conceived as a non-profit international industry-university-research collaboration.
Interested institutions are requested to indicate their intention to participate by 23 July 2026.
