PITs

Publication item types (PITs) are the item-level classification system employed by Elsevier for the various types of articles or chapters in a scientific book or journal.

Up until DTD 5.6.0, the list of valid PITs was enumerated in the DTD

Starting DTD 5.7.0, the list of valid PITs is a separate resource.

The Enhancement Fragment DTD is used to structure the content of material that is added to the online versions of journal items or book chapters after they have been published. The first type of enhancement fragments are book updates, formerly known as "darts".

Abstracting and Indexing (AnI) Schema

The Abstracting and Indexing Schema's are used by Elsevier's online content repositories. The CAR XML that is provided by suppliers to Elsevier are conforming to the AnI input schemas. The CAR XML send out to the Elsevier content repositories are based on the AnI output schemas.

The current version is 5.15.

CONTRAST (Content Transport Standard)

The Elsevier workflow is fully XML based. External content suppliers receive orders in the form of XML messages, and they deliver the content to Elsevier in a format called CONTRAST (Content Transport Standard). The standard provides rules and conventions for dataset deliveries. Each dataset is accompanied by a dataset description file that is structured according to a W3C schema. Since new versions of these schemas are published frequently, they are not posted here; contact us for more information. The latest version of the CONTRAST-in documentation is provided below.

CONTRAST is also used as an output format to deliver content from Elsevier's Electronic Warehouse to online content repositories. New schemas for these deliveries are published frequently. The latest version of the out-schemas for journals and books as well as the CONTRAST-out documentation are provided below.
