Elsevier introduces affordable ScienceDirect College Edition

Amsterdam, 25 June 2005 -- Elsevier will launch a brand new College Edition of ScienceDirect at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference later this month. (www.sciencedirect.com/college). The product has been developed for two- and four-year colleges whose primary purpose is teaching. ScienceDirect College Edition was created to meet the demands of students and teachers who have a need for scientific information, especially review material linked with the peer-reviewed, original research literature. The new ScienceDirect College Edition grants teachers and college students access to high quality information and material not available elsewhere.

ScienceDirect was originally designed for academic and corporate research libraries. They were among the first to see the potential of web delivery of scientific, technical and medical (STM) information to increase research productivity. Extensive research revealed that the demand for electronic delivery of quality STM information comes increasingly from colleges and students as well. The requirements of college users were thoroughly researched and are now addressed by the introduction of the ScienceDirect College Edition.

Amanda Spiteri, Marketing Director ScienceDirect and Bibliographic Databases, says, “It has now become common practice for college students to use the web for educational purposes instead of resorting to printed resources – they are much more likely to use electronic information that is immediately available to them on the web.” She continues, “We saw the potential to make ScienceDirect more accessible to a whole new population of users.”

”The ScienceDirect College Edition is a major step in the development of a long-term relationship between Elsevier and smaller teaching-based colleges,“ says Chris Bromley, Business Development Director, Physical and Social Sciences at Elsevier. "The launch of this Edition is a direct result of a consultative development process with customers. The feedback from Library Directors was incredibly positive, with many eager to know when the product will be released. With the growing importance of the two-year colleges in the USA, I'm particularly pleased to be able to offer valuable content to them at prices that are within their reach."

Dr Ravi Sharma, Library Director of West Virginia State University and Editor of Library Times International, says, “Student information literacy and concern about the quality of what is to be found on the web is a continuing challenge. It is an exciting prospect for our teachers and students to be able to use such an established and credible source on which they can rely. It is a great advancement for us to be able offer them access to the world’s largest and most renowned full-text database of scientific peer-reviewed quality information”
