Elsevier congratulates 2003 National Medal of Technology winner

Washington, D.C., March 14, 2005 - Elsevier is pleased to announce that today Professor Jan D. Achenbach, Editor-in-chief of its journal Wave Motion and Editor of its North-Holland Series in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, will receive the 2003 National Medal of Technology for seminal contributions to engineering research and education and for pioneering ultrasonic methods for the detection of cracks and corrosion in aircraft, leading to improved safety for aircraft structures. President George W. Bush will present the award to Achenbach at a White House ceremony attended by Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez, whose agency administers the National Medal of Technology program for the President, and the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Dr. John H. Marburger III.

Achenbach currently serves as a distinguished Walter P. Murphy Professor and Distinguished McCormick School Professor in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern University, as well as Director of its Center for Quality Engineering and Failure Prevention. Achenbach has developed methods for flaw detection and characterization by using contact transducers, imaging techniques and laser-based ultrasonics, and for thin-layer characterization by acoustic microscopy. His research also includes structural acoustics and mechanical behavior of composite materials.

Established in 1980 by Congress and first awarded in 1985, the National Medal of Technology (NMT) is the nation’s highest honor awarded to America's leading innovators. The Medal is awarded annually by the President of the United States to recognize outstanding contributions to the Nation's economic, environmental and social well being through the development and commercialization of technology. The National Medal of Technology recognizes those who have made lasting contributions to America's competitiveness, standard of living, quality of life through technological innovation, and strengthening of the nation’s technological workforce.
