Elsevier and the Emergency Nurses Association Launch New eLearning Course Focused on Psychiatric Emergencies
‘Handling Psychiatric Emergencies’ is endorsed by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA)Philadelphia, PA, February 28, 2013 – Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the launch of its new eLearning course, Handling Psychiatric Emergencies. Written by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), in collaboration with members of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), and offered exclusively by Elsevier, the course provides nurses with the information they need to safely care for patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies.
“Psychiatric emergency care is becoming increasingly more important in the US and abroad,” said Dr. Susan Hohenhaus, Executive Director of ENA. “The delivery of safe and effective emergency nursing care begins with standardized, evidence based education. Nurses can be confident that this psychiatric emergency continuing education has been developed by emergency nursing experts, led by ENA and Elsevier.”
This dynamic new course offers evidence-based continuing education to help nurses provide optimal care to patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies. The course features:
- · Custom live-action video, animations, and full-color images to illustrate concepts and procedures
- · Information about practice, legal/ethical issues, and cultural considerations
- · Links to drug monographs from Saunders Nursing Drug Handbook
- · The opportunity to earn continuing education credits from ENA
“The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requires hospitals to offer 24-hour-a-day psychiatric emergency care, and emergency nurses are caring for an increasing number of patients with psychiatric conditions,” said Cindy Tryniszewski, RN, MSN, Executive Director, Mosby's eLearning for Elsevier. “To meet this challenge, Elsevier has joined forces with ENA and APNA to offer this valuable course.”
APNA has endorsed this course.
“APNA is pleased to have collaborated with ENA,” said Nicholas Croce, Jr., MS, Executive Director of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. “The National Institute for Mental Health estimates that 26 percent of Americans ages 18 and older, about one in four adults, suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Many of these people will enter the mental health care system through the emergency rooms in our country. APNA is grateful for opportunity to have our members lend their expertise to such an important educational endeavor.”
Elsevier will showcase the ENA: Handling Psychiatric Emergencies course at the ENA Leadership Conference, as well as highlighting all of its solutions for Emergency Care, including Mosby’s eLearning, Mosby’s Skills, CPM CarePoints Emergency and ExitCare at booth 411.
