ScienceDirect Automated Holdings Updates for Knowledge Bases and Discovery Services
ScienceDirect subscribers can now set up data exchange tokens that grant access to their holding data via an Application Programming Interface (API). Once a token is set up, third-party providers of discovery services, article linkers, and other services can use the API to import a customer’s Electronic Holdings Report on demand, and can then use these data to update the customer’s knowledge base automatically.
Discovery services, article linkers, and other library systems depend on an accurate knowledge base of the customer’s holdings to support discovery and access of library resources. Previously, library service providers had to maintain collection title lists and librarians had to activate and deactivate various collections in their knowledge base configurations to match their subscription. This manual approach to knowledge base maintenance led to significant delays and errors. Automated holdings updates greatly reducing the librarians’ workload and greatly improve the accuracy of the knowledge base, which in turn greatly improves discovery and access to library resources. After setting up a token and asking the third-party provider to start using automated holdings updates, there is normally no further action required by customers.
How To Enable ScienceDirect Knowledge Base Data Exchange
You can create data exchange tokens yourself using the ScienceDirect Admin Tool. For step-by-step directions, please download this 6-page Quick Reference Guide.

Directions for Service Providers
Library service providers can use our Holdings Report API for generating ScienceDirect data in the universally accepted Knowledge Base and Related Tools (KBART) format. Providers who would like to work with us to automatically update your library customers’ knowledge bases with their ScienceDirect holdings information using this API are invited to contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org.

“Elsevier has taken a lead role in helping libraries improve user access to electronic resources. They were the first to develop these APIs which help time-strapped librarians deliver up-to-date resources. This proactive API serves as a model for other publishers.”
