Description

The posterior gluteal line is a curved ridge found along the gluteal surface of ilium. It is the shortest of the three gluteal lines, the other two being the anterior and inferior gluteal lines. It begins at the dorsal region of the iliac crest, and then travels in a posteroinferior direction, curving slightly to end at the greater sciatic notch.

The region between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines provides an origin site for the gluteus medius muscle, while the region behind the posterior gluteal line provides an origin site for the gluteus maximus muscle and an attachment site for the sacrotuberous ligament.
