Anatomical Relations

The anulus fibrosus is the outer component of the intervertebral disc. However, the anulus fibrosis is thinner posteriorly. They insert into the epiphyseal rim on the outer perimeter of the vertebral bodies.

Function

The anulus fibrosus aids in the structural integrity of the vertebral column. The oblique arrangement of adjacent layers of fibers limits rotation and aids in the strength (Standring, 2016).

Structure

It is composed of an outer lamella of collagen fibers and inner lamellae of fibrocartilaginous tissue. The fibers of adjacent lamellae are arranged obliquely in opposite directions.
