Elsevier's Mendeley Data assumes a leadership role in NIH's Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative, championing open science and collaboration

Elsevier, a global leader in research information and analytics, announced today its pivotal role through Mendeley Data as a co-chair in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI). This leadership engagement underscores Elsevier’s unwavering commitment to advancing research data sharing and discovery as essential elements of open science and fostering collaboration across the research community.

The Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI), an initiative of the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy now entering its third year, is a coopetition model strategic partnership of seven generalist repositories coordinated by the NIH. GREI serves as a critical hub for advancing research data sharing, accessibility, and transparency by bringing together interested parties from research and libraries, institutions, and repositories. Through collaborative efforts, GREI aims to enhance the discoverability and usability of shared scientific data across disciplines.

As a participating repository, Mendeley Data has already made significant headway in enhancing its platform to meet and exceed the desirable characteristics of a generalist repository and has co-chaired and participated in numerous sub-committees and task groups including but not limited to: Community Engagement Planning, the Metadata and Search Sub-Committee, and the ROR Implementation Recommendations Task Force.

Saad Khan,Vice President of Digital Commons at Elsevier, stated, "We extend our sincere appreciation to the Year 2 Co-Chairs, John Chodacki of the California Digital Library and Ana Van Gulick of Figshare, for their invaluable contributions."

The GREI Co-Chairs play a pivotal role in shaping the initiative’s trajectory in partnership with the NIH, ensuring that repositories remain dynamic, inclusive, and responsive to the evolving needs of funders, researchers, and institutions worldwide. Their responsibilities include:

  • Coordination: Providing strategic guidance and governance for the entire Coopetition Working Group (CWG), the formal decision-making body within GREI.

  • Workplan Implementation: Facilitating the implementation of the yearly GREI CWG plans, incorporating ongoing input from CWG members.

  • Meeting Facilitation: Organizing and leading monthly CWG meetings and the annual in-person gathering.

Theo Pillay, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Academic Information Systems at Elsevier, stated,” Elsevier is pleased to continue our participation in the GREI through Mendeley Data. Our ongoing participation reflects our commitment to open science, where collaboration, transparency, and inclusivity drive progress. Transparent research practices, including open research data sharing, underpin reproducibility and are integral to maintaining trust in science.
