Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Shahriman Abu Bakar

Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Shahriman Abu Bakar obtained his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (System Design), and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (System Design) from Mie University, Japan.

He began his career as an R&D Engineer at NEC Semiconductor, where he gained valuable industrial experience in research and development, manufacturing systems, and equipment engineering. During his tenure, he contributed to process optimisation initiatives and improvements in operational efficiency.

In 2010, he joined Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) as a member of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technology. Throughout his academic career, he has held several key leadership positions and has made significant contributions to the university’s academic, research, and innovation ecosystem.

He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technology, where he led strategic academic planning, quality assurance initiatives, research development, industry collaboration, and human capital advancement. Prior to that, In 2013, he was appointed Head of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Automotive and Motorsport, a position he held for ten years. His area of specialisation is Automotive Technology, particularly internal combustion engine systems, and he has published extensively in this field.

Professor Shahriman has secured cumulative research funding of approximately RM7 million from industry and government agencies for transportation-related research and development projects. In collaboration with leading automotive industry partners, he led the development of several notable innovations, including Malaysia’s first hybrid motorcycle and a fully mechanised oil palm harvesting system, among other commercially driven relevant products and holding several patents and UIs.

He is currently serving as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).
