Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Shukry Abdul Majid. S.M.P.

Ir. Prof. Dr. Mohd Shukry Abdul Majid is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and currently serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). Born in Taiping, Perak, he demonstrated strong academic potential from an early age and was awarded a full scholarship to pursue A-Levels before continuing his engineering studies at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) in 2001. Prior to entering academia, he began his career in the semiconductor industry as an R&D engineer, gaining valuable industrial exposure that continues to inform his approach to applied research and industry engagement.

He later obtained a Master of Science from the University of Liverpool and a Doctor of Philosophy from Newcastle University, United Kingdom. His research expertise lies primarily in mechanical engineering and advanced composite materials, where he has made significant contributions through both fundamental and applied research. To date, he has authored 303 Scopus-indexed publications and 109 ISI-indexed journal articles, with a cumulative impact factor exceeding 439, and has produced several patents and registered industrial designs. His scholarly influence is reflected in an h-index of 35 (Scopus) and 39 (Google Scholar).

As Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Shukry has led a series of institutional reforms aimed at strengthening academic quality, internationalisation, and industry relevance. Between 2023 and 2025, UniMAP experienced a strong recovery and growth in enrolment, reaching nearly 16,000 students, representing a 30% increase compared to 2023. During the same period, the university successfully achieved 100% accreditation for engineering and engineering technology programmes under EAC, ETAC, MBOT and MQA, while modernising its academic offerings and strengthening industry-driven programmes.

Under his leadership, UniMAP accelerated academic transformation through the integration of emerging technologies, with 85% of academic programmes enhanced with artificial intelligence elements, alongside more than RM42 million invested in laboratory and research infrastructure. The university also strengthened its national role in technical education, with TVET-related programmes accounting for more than half of student enrolment, positioning UniMAP among Malaysia’s leading technical universities.

Internationalisation efforts also expanded significantly, with international student enrolment increasing by 95%, alongside expanded global mobility programmes and strategic collaborations with international partner universities.

Beyond institutional leadership, Prof. Shukry remains actively engaged in research, postgraduate supervision and professional service. He has successfully supervised numerous postgraduate students and continues to contribute as a reviewer and editorial board member for international journals. A Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council (UK), he is also actively involved in national engineering accreditation processes.

His academic and professional contributions have been recognised through several honours, including the Malaysia Research Star Award (2017), appointment as Top Research Scientist Malaysia (2022) by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and the Anugerah Seri Gemilang Tokoh Akademik UniMAP (2023). In recognition of his contributions to higher education and national development, he was also conferred the Darjah Setia Mahkota Perlis (SMP) by DYMM Tuanku Raja Perlis on 17 May 2025, in conjunction with the 82nd Celebration of the Royal Birthday of the Raja of Perlis.
