Prof. Martin Hazelton

Martin Hazelton is Professor of Statistics at the University of Otago. His research interests are varied, including spatial statistics, statistical inverse problems, and kernel smoothing. He has around 100 journal papers in these and related areas. Martin read mathematics at the University of Oxford, where he stayed for his doctorate in statistics. Following this, he worked as a research assistant in Oxford before taking up faculty positions at University College London and the University of Western Australia. Martin was appointed chair of statistics at Massey University in New Zealand in 2006, moving to the University of Otago in 2019. Martin was editor-in-chief of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics, and is a former President of the New Zealand Statistical Association. Outside work, Martin plays chess (well), the violin (badly), and supports Newcastle United Football Club (tragically).
