3D neuroimaging
We are currently changing the display of data visualizations on ScienceDirect. As a result, 3D visualizations will not display on ScienceDirect immediately. However, you may still submit your data files and they will appear with your article once the new version is available.
About 3D neuroimaging visualizations
You can include 3D neuroimaging data visualizations in the NIfTI format with your online article on ScienceDirect. The viewer on ScienceDirect integrates a specific visualization mapper, which automatically combines a master volume of the brain with functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI).In 3D neuroimaging visualizations on ScienceDirect, users can:
Browse through available neuroimaging datasets
Zoom, rotate and pan the 3D brain reconstruction
Cut through the volume
Change opacity and color mapping
Switch between 3D and 2D projected views
Download the data
Open the viewer in detached full-screen mode
Visualizations will be published in the online version only. If you would like the print or PDF version of your article to feature images of the visualization, please include these as figures in your article. If you have concerns about your data being downloadable, please submit a video instead.

Preparing
You can submit files for the 3D Neuroimaging Viewer along with your manuscript.
The file type we support is NIfTI(opens in new tab/window) (Neuroimaging Informatics Technology Initiative), a standard data format used in neuroimaging to capture volumetric (f)MRI data. We support single (.nii) and dual (.hdr and .img) NIfTI file formats.
Please zip each dataset. The recommended size of a single uncompressed dataset is ≤100 MB. Prepare a short informative description for each data file before submission.
The viewer on ScienceDirect integrates a specific visualization mapper, which automatically combines a master volume of the brain with functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI). To make use of this feature, please create a separate zip with the brain template file.
You can also upload three-dimensional renderings as OBJ, PLY or U3D models.
Submitting
In your manuscript, you can indicate where you want the material to appear in the article, for example by writing ‘File1.nii here’.
Submit your dataset(s) with your manuscript via the online submission system, selecting the '3D neuroimaging data' submission optioin in the dropdown menu.
Enter your short description(s) in the "Description" field
Upload your brain template file as a separate zip file
Reviewer instructions
Reviewers will find NIfTI files associated with the 3D Neuroimaging Viewer in the supplementary material submitted with the manuscript. Instructions are included in the reviewer invitation letter.
EES: the files can be downloaded via links on the final pages of the reviewer PDF
EVISE: the files can be downloaded directly from the system
