The results from the Eighth
Annual Knovel University Challenge are in, and they represent the
growing international presence of Knovel at academic institutions. The top 10
universities with the highest participation in the 2013 Challenge hailed from the
U.S., Canada, Mexico, Turkey and China. There was also an increase in
participation from UK universities including University College London, University
of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham. In
total, 24 students from 16 universities took home individual prizes including
Samsung Chromebooks, Pebble smartwatches and Roku Media Players.
Students from the University of Arkansas won a $500 pizza party for having the most entrants in the Challenge of all participating universities. The 2013 grand prize winners are Brad Jackowich of the University of Alberta and Jacob Schimelman of Case Western Reserve University. A full list of prize recipients is available on the University Challenge website.
Each year the Knovel University Challenge presents a series of questions on engineering-related topics, and students can use Knovel to research and find the answers. Questions were created by Knovel staff or submitted by participating University faculty members.
"Our students have the opportunity to practice searching on Knovel while participating in the Knovel University Challenge," said Emre Hasan Akbayrak, Associate Director, Middle East Technical University (METU) Library. "They can quickly look up needed information from a very reliable source and test their knowledge of engineering. The Knovel University Challenge is one of the most amazing events which I've ever seen in a scientific environment."
METU Students were among this year's winners.
The Challenge introduces future engineers to Knovel's capabilities, and this year's contest gave students a chance to work on the new Knovel platform, which was introduced in September of 2013.
