About Elsevier's Article Publishing Charges tool
The APC Comparison Tool is a new feature we are piloting across Elsevier’s Journal Homepages on ScienceDirect. This innovative tool enables users to compare different journals for price and quality to help inform their decision-making on the most appropriate journal for them to submit their work to. This tool has been developed based on one-to-one interviews with representatives from key stakeholder groups including authors and librarians, together with extensive user testing in developing and refining the user interface.
Users of the tool can compare the list price Article Publishing Charges (APCs) of up to five journals, selected freely, including those from Elsevier and for other publishers. For each chosen journal, the business model, list price APC, and the Scopus CiteScore and Clarivate Journal Impact Factor (where indexed), will be displayed in an easy-to-read table, allowing for a comprehensive side-by-side analysis.
Elsevier is committed to price transparency, which includes providing information to the research community to help them make data-led decisions on where to publish. This tool is just one part of our broad offering which includes:
Information on our pricing policy, list prices, components that factor into our pricing (here).
Metrics available on our journal homepages, including acceptance rates, and average review and publication times. Similar information can also be found via our Journal Finder tool.
Details about our publishing volumes under subscription and open access business models for the whole of Elsevier in our investor presentations (e.g. here)
We welcome feedback from customers to inform how we will develop this tool and advance our work in this area.
