As Nankai University enters the new century and strides forward to build itself into a world-class university and develop world-class disciplines, we have recently launched the “Seeking Excellence” plan, which has clearly marked out the development blueprint of reviving humanities and social sciences, promoting natural sciences, enhancing engineering and developing biomedicine. Through the implementation of this plan, we want to put forward an overall university reform, promote interdisciplinary research, enhance international collaborations, attract talented researchers, cultivate innovative students and increase our global influence.
Solving the major scientific problems in human society requires an integrative research approach. To encourage cooperation between scientists with various backgrounds at Nankai University, we are establishing 10 on-campus interdisciplinary research centers based on the national strategic needs and our existing strength. Each center will address one major scientific issue, such as new energy, material science.
Internationalization is one important part of the “Seeking Excellence” plan. In order to increase our global influence and strengthen our collaborations with top international universities, we plan to build 10 joint research centers abroad, focusing on important issues such as health, energy, environment and sustainable development. At present, joint research centers respectively with University of Oxford and University of Birmingham are under construction. Student and faculty mobility are integral parts of internationalization, to which Nankai University is committed and will provide more grants to support the international exchange for students and young faculty members, cultivating talents with global vision.
Recruiting talents is also an important part of our plan. We launched a series of talent-oriented initiatives to attract prominent scholars, academic leaders, young talents and innovative research teams for seeking a sustainable development. We will provide customized schemes to facilitate talents to settle down and establish laboratories.
