Opening lecture: Transforming the chemical industry to greenhouse gas neutrality

Prof. Ferdi Schüth studied Chemistry and Law at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität of Münster. In1984 he passed his studies of Chemistry, continued as a Ph.D. and received his doctorate in chemistry in 1988. Till 1989 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow with L.D. Schmidt at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (USA).  At the same time he continued his studies of Law and passed the First State Exam in 1989.

During his work towards his habilitation from 1989 till 1994, he was scientific assistant at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität of Mainz and searched in 1993 as visiting assistant professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara (USA). In 1995 he received his qualification as a Professor in Chemistry. From 1995 till 1998 he was full professor for Inorganic Chemistry at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt. Since 1998 he is Director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr and from 2014 until June 2020 he was Vicepresident of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in München. Ferdi Schüth received several awards, among those the Award of the Stifterverband der Deutschen Wissenschaft in 2001, the Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz-Award of the DFG as well as the Wöhler-Award, the Hamburger Wissenschaft-Award and the Carl-Friedrich-von-Weizsäcker-Award. Ferdi Schüth is member of numerous editorial boards and committees, e.g. Dechema, till 2014 Vicepresident of the DFG, appointed to the selection committee of the Deutsche Zukunftspreis, being the Chairman since 2012. He is Professor h.c. at the University of Technology in Dalian, P. R. China and the University of Technology TUM in Munich and founder of the hte AG (with BASF as main shareholder). His research field comprises energy, biomass conversion, crystallization processes, synthesis of catalyst materials, catalysis, zeolites, ordered mesoporous materials and hydrogen storage materials. Ferdi Schüth has about 460 publications, 55 plenary lectures, 300 contributions to conferences and approx. 40 patents or patent applications. He was born in 1960 in Warstein, is married and father of two daughters.
