From research impact to university excellence

From Research Impact to University Excellence

Introduction

In a fast-changing higher education landscape, research excellence is more critical than ever. Universities must not only deliver world-class research but also understand and demonstrate their impact on academia, policy, industry, and society.

The theme “From Research Impact to Research Excellence” highlights how institutions can turn knowledge into influence, and influence into long-term strength. This event brings together thought leaders and innovators to discuss strategies for leveraging research impact as a foundation for excellence—helping universities stay competitive, relevant, and transformative in a global context.

Society, Science, and the University Spark Dr. Alison Elizabeth Lloyd Associate Provost (Institutional Data and Research) The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Universities are engines of discovery, but funders and the public at-large now demand to understand how the academia is changing lives and livelihoods. So how, and how often does university research truly reach beyond the academy? Dr Lloyd will share her insights in the evolving landscape of impact assessment, the importance going beyond scholarly influence to understand real-world effects on policy, industry, and communities. She also addresses the challenges of gathering robust data and crafting compelling narratives. Spotlighting HKUST, she will show the tools that are useful to demonstrate how bibliometrics can reveal the broader socio-economic footprint of university research, measure, and communicate their impact that matters far beyond the traditional confines of academic impact.

Driving Research Excellence: Use Cases in Ranking, Performance analytics, and API Utilization Seungyun Lee Office of Institutional Research & Planning Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) This presentation explores how Elsevier’s SciVal API can be leveraged to drive research excellence and inform institutional strategy. Through practical use cases at Sungkyunkwan University, we demonstrate applications of the API in analyzing institutional research performance, identifying emerging research trends, and assessing individual researcher impact. Beyond benchmarking against global peers and supporting world university rankings, these insights guide strategic planning and resource allocation. The session concludes with a roadmap discussion on expanding API-driven analytics for future institutional decision-making.

From Academia to Society: Building New Value Through Cross-Sector Collaboration Dr. Amane Koizumi Vice President for Corporate Strategy, Professor, Transformative Knowledge Management Research Area, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) In evaluating the research capacity of universities, my collaborators and I have highlighted the importance of a third dimension—“ATSUMI”

(厚)—in addition to the conventional measures of quantity and quality.

ATSUMI offers a way to anticipate the potential for future societal impact.

To maximize such impact, research must extend across disciplinary and sectoral boundaries. History shows that several Nobel Prize–winning achievements, though rooted in fundamental inquiry, ultimately generated broad societal benefits by crossing into other fields. This demonstrates that boundary-crossing is essential for research to realize its full societal value.

This perspective resonates with the concept of the 4th Generation University (4GU), which redefines universities not as isolated producers of value but as institutions that co-create value with society from the outset. As a board member of the 4GU community, I will share reflections on this vision.

My presentation will explore these perspectives and invite discussion on how academia, government, and society can collaborate to create new societal value.

Universities As Cocreators of Economic and Societal Impact Dr. Anders Karlsson Vice President, Global Strategic Networks, Elsevier APAC Spurred by economic and societal challenges, universities are increasingly asked to showcase/prove their impact beyond academia and to seek a more mission driven approach, still while retaining being bastions of deep knowledge and curiosity driven research. Evolving from knowledge producers to strategic co-creators of societal and economic transformation, 4th generation universities, a concept introduced by Technical University of Eindhoven and supported by Elsevier is growing into a community of knowledge exchange and best practices. The presentation will focus on key concepts of 4th generation universities, as well as with a discussion on capturing indicators of broader economic and societal impact.
