Information Modeling and Relational Databases

Edition 3

Welcome to the Companion site for Information Modeling and Relational Databases, 3rd Edition.

About This Companion Site

This site includes links to Solutions, Appendices, NORMA, the Visio ORM2 stencil and template, and Errata

Solutions

These are the odd-numbered solutions. The even numbered solutions are for instructors only.

NORMA

Information on how to get the free download of NORMA:

The main modeling method discussed in the book is ORM 2 (second-generation object-role modeling). The Natural ORM Architect (NORMA) tool for ORM 2 is available as a free, open-source plug-in to Microsoft Visual Studio (2005 or later version). The Community Edition of Visual Studio may be downloaded and installed for free. Higher-end versions of Visual Studio may be purchased from Microsoft Corporation or resellers.

The free NORMA tool for ORM 2 may be accessed directly in the Extension Manager for Visual Studio (click Extensions, then Manage Extensions, then enter “NORMA” in the search window). Alternatively, NORMA may be downloaded from either https://ormsolutions.com/ opens in new tab/window or https://sourceforge.net/projects/orm opens in new tab/window. For details on installing and using NORMA, see the NORMA Labs at http://www.orm.net/resources.html opens in new tab/window.

NORMA Pro has additional features such as multipage relational schemas and formal support for derivation rules, but it is not free. For details on NORMA Pro, contact Matt Curland at [email protected] opens in new tab/window.

Visio ORM2 Drawing Stencil and Template

A Visio stencil and template for drawing ORM 2 schemas are accessible in the following http://www.orm.net/ORM2_Draw2v25.zip opens in new tab/window. These files require Visio standard edition (or higher, e.g.,Visio Professional), and are for drawing only, not code generation. It is completely separate from the NORMA tool. The zip file unpacks to two folders and a readme txt file. The stencil and template files in the Visio 2003-2010_format folder also work with later versions of Visio (e.g., Microsoft Visio 2021), even though Visio files are now stored by default as .vsdx files rather than .vsd files.

Errata

An errata file will be maintained at http://www.orm.net/Errata3.html opens in new tab/window to note typos or other errors detected in the third edition of Information Modeling and Relational Databases.
