Prof. Andrea Gomez-Zavaglia

Andrea Gomez-Zavaglia is Director of the Center for Research and Development in Food Science and Technology (CIDCA-CONICET). She is also a member of the Board of Directors of CONICET La Plata and Scientific Manager of the CYTED Program, which promotes scientific and technological cooperation across Ibero-America. She currently holds the position of Superior (Full Senior) Researcher at CONICET, the highest rank in the institution's scientific research career.
She holds a PhD in Exact Sciences from the National University of La Plata, Argentina, and completed postdoctoral stages at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (Germany), and the University of Coimbra (Portugal).
Her research focuses on Food Science and Technology, particularly the development of functional ingredients. Her work encompasses the entire production chain, from obtaining these ingredients to their stabilization and storage, with particular emphasis on sustainability and the molecular mechanisms governing their physicochemical properties.
She has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, 25 book chapters, and two books (Springer). She is also an inventor on seven patents, has contributed to the development of three products currently on the market, and is the co-founder of two biotechnology start-ups. She has secured funding as Principal Investigator for more than 50 highly competitive R&D&I projects supported by national and international organizations (Horizon Europe, CYTED, among others). In recognition of her scientific contributions, she was included among the world's top 2% of scientists in Food Science and Physical Chemistry in the 2024 and 2025 Stanford/Elsevier rankings. She has also held visiting professorships at the University of Vigo (Spain, 2009), the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain, since 2010), Université Paris Cité (France, since 2014), AgroParisTech (France, 2019), and the University of Teramo (Italy, 2022).
She currently collaborates with more than 30 research groups and companies across over 15 countries in Europe and the Americas. She has delivered more than 50 lectures at academic institutions and companies in Argentina and Europe.
Andrea Gomez-Zavaglia currently serves as Senior Editor of Food Chemistry X (Elsevier) and has served as Guest Editor of Current Opinion in Food Science. In addition, she has organized more than 20 international conferences and workshops and has served on several international advisory boards.
