APEC Science Prize calls for 2023 nominees
Singapore | 29 de março de 2023
APEC is now accepting nominations for the 2023 APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (ASPIRE), which highlights young scientists, aged 40 and under, who exemplify a commitment to international science collaboration.
As the host of APEC 2023, the United States selected the theme of “inclusive science, technology, and innovation for a resilient and sustainable environment” for the prize this year. The theme celebrates those working on advancing environmental resiliency and sustainability through diverse perspectives, as well as promoting an inclusive scientific ecosystem.
“It is vital that we promote inclusivity at all stages of science and research in order to create solutions for a more sustainable future,” said Xuemei Yang, Chair of the APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology, and Innovation (PPSTI).
Research surrounding this theme could include areas such as increased social connectivity of underserved and marginalized populations, the promotion of self-sustaining ecosystems, or solutions for mitigating public health risks.
Nominees’ research should represent the pinnacle of international scientific collaboration and science diplomacy. Their work could be of various disciplines including biology, oceanography, chemistry, environmental science, public health, economics, data science, social science, among other fields.
“We hope to inspire the next generation of scientific talent as we celebrate innovations from around the APEC region with the ASPIRE, which was launched during the last United States host year in 2011,” said Jason Donovan, the Host Vice Chair of the APEC PPSTI.
Each APEC member economy can nominate one scientist under the age of 40. Individual nominees will be evaluated not only on scholarly publication contributions, but also on their interactions and collaborations with other scientists across the APEC region.
The 2023 winner of ASPIRE will be awarded a USD 25,000 prize, co-sponsored by two of the world’s largest scholarly scientific research publishers, Wiley and Elsevier. The winner will also be honored at an annual award ceremony in Seattle hosted by United States in August.
“It is essential that we spotlight young scientists whose research creates more effective outcomes in preparing the world for a more sustainable future,” said Youngsuk “Y.S.” Chi, Chairman of Elsevier. “ASPIRE brings together impressive international scientists whose research can inform the public and private sector’s decisions on key global issues that impact us all,” he continued.
“We honor all young scientific talent and, with ASPIRE, we are proud to celebrate the essential contributions of younger generations in creating solutions that can directly improve the health and trajectory of our global ecosystem,” said Brian Napack, President and CEO of Wiley.
