From Knowledge Production to Real World Impact: Rethinking Business School Strategy

Business schools were established to professionalize management through rigorous, discipline-based research, a model still deeply embedded in today's incentive and accreditation systems. That model is under pressure. Movements around responsible research and AACSB's Framework for Research Impactopens in new tab/window reflect a growing recognition that scholarship needs to connect more directly with the world outside the academy.
The 4th Generation University (4GU)opens in new tab/window framework offers one of the more developed responses to this challenge. Where earlier university models focused on teaching, then research, 4GU places regional and societal impact at the center of institutional identity, treating it not as a byproduct of good scholarship but as something that has to be designed for, measured, and sustained. Universities working within this framework are restructuring incentive systems, building long-term stakeholder partnerships, and developing new ways of demonstrating value.
This session asks what business schools can learn from that experience. The discussion will draw on examples from institutions already working within the 4GU model and will examine:
How incentive and recognition systems can be redesigned to reward societal engagement
What stakeholder partnerships look like in practice, and how they are built
How regional and societal impact can be measured in ways that are credible and useful
The session will also address what makes this transition hard for business schools specifically: promotion criteria still tied to elite journal lists, reward systems misaligned with engagement work, and the challenge of building faculty buy-in for approaches that may not yet benefit their careers.
The aim is to leave participants with practical insights they can take back to their own institutions, and an opportunity to connect with the 4GU initiative directly for those who want to explore further.

The speed review sessions serve as an invaluable opportunity for you to engage with our editors, facilitating meaningful discussions surrounding your paper or research concepts. The primary objective is to enable attendees to present a succinct overview of your research project or paper, allowing the editor to provide insightful and constructive feedback.
Each session is 15 minutes long with the editor that you select, and all sessions will take place in-person at the Elsevier booth (Booth #207) during AOM 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Academy of Management Inside Organizationsopens in new tab/window is a premier open access journal for rigorous, original, and globally accessible research on life inside organizations. AMIO focuses on the internal dynamics of organizing: how organizational actors think, feel, act, interact, lead, learn, and change in the complex realities of work. The Editor-in-Chief is Zhike Lei (International Institute for Management Development, Switzerland).
Academy of Management Organizations and Their Environments
Academy of Management Organizations and Their Environmentsopens in new tab/window is a premier open access journal for research examining the dynamic interplay between organizations and their macro contexts. The journal publishes pioneering research on business units, firms, industries, sectors, institutions, organizational populations with their external environment.
