FAQs
Embase updates daily, adding more than 8,500 new records to its biomedical database every working day — that's over 2.9 million new records each year. More than 400,000 of the records added to Embase each year are conference abstracts.
Ahead of print articles are added to Embase as soon as they are available. Ahead of print articles are listed electronically before being assigned to a journal volume/issue.
PubMed consists of three biomedical and life sciences databases: MEDLINE, PMC and Bookshelf.
MEDLINE is the life sciences journal citation and abstract database of the US National Library of Medicine (NLM). MEDLINE content is indexed with the NLM's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) thesaurus.
Embase is also a life sciences journal citation and abstract database from Elsevier with more comprehensive content than MEDLINE. Embase has approximately 18 million more records than MEDLINE. Embase includes conferences, MEDLINE does not. Embase has more coverage of journals outside the US than MEDLINE, and Embase has approximately 70,000 more preferred terms indexed than MEDLINE.
PMC is an archive of full-text life sciences and biomedical journal literature.
Bookshelf is an archive of full-text books and other documents in life sciences and healthcare.

To be considered for coverage in Embase, all journal titles must meet these minimum criteria:
Scientific quality and editorial coverage
Peer-reviewed content with a publicly available description of the peer review process
English language abstracts and titles
Diversity in geographical distribution of editors and authors
Clarity of abstracts
Quality of and conformity to the stated aims and scope of the journal
Readability of articles
Information about the journal
Published periodically with an ISSN
Available in electronic format
Publicly available publication ethics and publication malpractice statement
Clear and convincing editorial policy
Website accessible in English
Scope, subject and geographic coverage
The content of the recommended journal must be in the scope and subject areas covered by Embase for consideration. The submission form includes an Embase classification list from which covered subjects can be selected.
Title reevaluation
The quality of our content is paramount for Elsevier. In addition to journals undergoing a rigorous evaluation and selection processes prior to acceptance, they must also demonstrate the ability to maintain their quality year over year.
Elsevier runs an ongoing reevaluation program to identify outlier and underperforming journals.
Publishers or editors of a title can suggest a journal for coverage in Embase. Individual researchers and librarians can also suggest titles for Embase, but these suggestions need to be supported by the publisher and/or editor.
