About the Authors

Shashank Arora

Shashank Arora is an Endeavour fellow and a recipient of Sir George Julius Medal, a highly prestigious award given by Engineers Australia to individual researchers for their exceptional contribution to the field of Mechanical Engineering. He received a bachelors of technology degree from Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow, India in 2008. Till 2011, he led the site engineering activities for one of the major EPC contactors in heavy-engineering sector on the longest and the second-longest flyovers in India as a plant engineer. Subsequently, he was awarded a Masters degree in Advanced Mechanical Engineering by the University of Leeds, UK in 2012 and later a doctoral degree by Swinburne University of Technology, Australia in 2017. Shashank’s research focusses on large battery packs, more specifically, battery packaging and thermal management systems for electric vehicles. His research outputs have been published by leading high-impact journals in the field and were applied to design the first fully developed and manufactured electric bus in Australia.

Alireza Tashakori Abkenar

Alireza Tashakori Abkenar received his BEng degree in Electrical Engineering from Iran in 2005, and the MSc degree in Electronics from Bangalore University, India, in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia in 2014. He continued his career as a research engineer since 2010 along with his PhD studies on electric vehicles and later on as a postdoctoral research engineer until 2017 at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. During the 8 years at Swinburne University, he successfully delivered multiple electric vehicle related industrial/research projects; and he was a lead engineer in driveline control system design of the first Australian designed, developed and manufactured electric bus. Then he moved to industry sector as the engineering team lead at Avass Electric Bus Manufacturing Group. He led the engineering design and development of the new generation of Avass electric buses. During his time in Avass, he successfully achieved all Australian Design Rules (ADR) approvals for Matilda Gen II electric city bus for the first time in Australia. He is currently a chief engineer in TGTECH providing consultancy to electric vehicle projects in Australia and overseas. He has more than seventeen publications all directly related to electric vehicles with more than 190 citations.

Shantha Jayasinghe

Shantha Gamini Jayasinghe (SM’16) received his B.Sc. degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka, in 2003, and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2013. From 2011 to 2015 he worked as an Electrical Systems Engineer at Rolls Royce Advanced Technology Centre in Singapore. Currently, he is a lecturer in maritime electrical engineering at the Australian Maritime Collage which is a specialist institute of the University of Tasmania. Shantha has authored or co-authored over 70 international journal and conference papers and three book chapters. He holds 8 US/UK patents. His research interests include power electronic converters, renewable energy technologies, grid integration of energy systems, shipboard power systems, electric propulsion and electric vehicles.

Kari Tammi

Kari Tammi has received MSc, LicSc, and DSc at Helsinki University of Technology in 1999, 2003, and 2007. He received Teacher’s pedagogical qualification at Häme University of Applied Sciences in 2017. He has worked as an Associate Professor at Aalto University since 2015. He also serves Finnish Administrative Supreme Court as Chief Engineer Counselor. Earlier, he worked as Research Professor, Research Manager, Team Leader and other positions at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (2000-2015). He was a postdoctoral researcher at North Carolina State University (USA, 2007-2008), and a researcher at CERN, European Organization for Nuclear Research in 1997-2000. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications cited in more than 1500 other publications. Dr. Tammi serves as the deputy chair for IFTOMM Finland, he is a member of IEEE and the Finnish Academy of Technology. His research targets better energy efficiency and reduced life-cycle cost in such applications as in electro-hybrid power systems, the dynamic phenomena in machinery, and the control of machines. Prof. Tammi has supervised five doctoral theses, and he has three doctoral students working on the design robustness of electric powertrains and IoT data for engineering design. His research team contributes to and benefits from the facilities of Aalto Industrial Internet Campus (AIIC, AIIC and earlier training in innovation management help him to connect with students’ entrepreneurial activities.
